Ubatuba

John Cratchley Ingrid Laubrock is developing into a very fine composer these days...
Here she co-opts the services of Tim Berne (one of my Big 5) which takes the music another notch higher for me and also uses a Tuba in place of a bass (not common but it has been done before by both Arthur Blythe and Bill Frisell among others, as I recall)...
Lovely playing with a lyrical edge and lots of detail...but with a fierce, intense quality as well and a fine balance between composition and improvisation.
Tim Berne and Tom Rainey are old sparring partners, so there is some existing 'esp' here...the tuba and trombone are an intriguing combination too; lots of extended technique on display from all involved.
It all fits together perfectly...this is a band full of composers but Laubrock's vision remains constant,I think. Favorite track: Hypnic Jerk.

about

'Ubatuba' is the eponymous release by Ingrid Laubrock's newest quintet. Besides the leader (as,ts), Ubatuba features a hand picked group of musicians such as alto saxophonist Tim Berne, trombonist Ben Gerstein, tuba player Dan Peck and drummer Tom Rainey. The release features all original compositions by Laubrock.

Laubrock writes in the liner notes, "from the beginning, I have always
relied on the piano for composing. When conceiving this record, I decided to try a different approach and compose either using the saxophone or pencil and paper only. The result is polyphonic, linear and occasionally like a big living organism waltzing over the listener. In this music I was looking for balance and polarity, density and space, rhythm and looseness, notes between notes and variety of color. There is much detail in the writing but often with improvisational layers on top to blur the lines and leave the listener guessing. My compositional process tends to bear the particular musicians' strengths and characters in mind and Tim, Tom, Dan and Ben are masterfully inventive musicians who came up with great and imaginative ways of bringing my music to live."
